Creating a calming bedroom space for girls with ADHD or autism

For girls with ADHD or autism, a well-organised, calming bedroom can reduce sensory overload and provide a much-needed space to recharge. Designing their space with thoughtfulness can improve focus, relaxation, and emotional regulation.

Tips for a Calming Bedroom Design

  1. Neutral colours: Soft, muted shades like pastel blues, greens, and creams create a calming effect. Avoid bold or busy patterns that might overstimulate.
  2. Declutter the space: Too many objects or visual distractions can be overwhelming. Keep surfaces clear and use labeled bins or shelves for easy organisation.
  3. Lighting: Install soft, dimmable lights or use lamps with warm light. Avoid fluorescent lighting, which can be harsh for sensory-sensitive individuals.
  4. Sensory zones: Create small “zones,” such as a cozy reading nook with a weighted blanket, noise-canceling headphones, or soft cushions.
  5. Visual organisation: Use clear labels, colour-coded bins, or visual charts to help girls with ADHD stay organised.
  6. Reduce noise: Add rugs, curtains, or soundproofing elements to minimise echoes and external noise distractions.

Why it works

A calming bedroom offers a sense of security and predictability for neurodivergent girls. It supports better sleep, reduces anxiety, and gives them a retreat to manage sensory challenges.
