Signs of ADHD in girls

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) often presents differently in girls compared to boys, which is why many girls remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. While boys are more likely to display hyperactivity and impulsivity, girls frequently exhibit inattentive ADHD traits, making their struggles harder to spot.

Common Signs of ADHD in Girls:

  1. Daydreaming: Girls with inattentive ADHD may appear “lost in thought” or distracted rather than hyperactive.
  2. Disorganization: Difficulty keeping track of homework, personal items, or multi-step instructions.
  3. Emotional Sensitivity: Frequent mood swings or feelings of overwhelm.
  4. Verbal Hyperactivity: While they may not fidget, girls with ADHD can be overly talkative, but they struggle to focus on what others say.
  5. Low Self-Esteem: Unrecognised struggles often result in self-doubt, as girls internalise their difficulties.

Why this matters

Girls are often labeled as “lazy,” “quiet,” or “scatterbrained,” leading to shame and self-blame. Undiagnosed ADHD can impact academic performance, social relationships, and emotional well-being.

What to do

If you notice these signs, consult a paediatrician, specialist, or educational psychologist for an ADHD evaluation. Early diagnosis can empower girls with targeted strategies, such as time management tools, movement breaks, and emotional regulation exercises, to thrive at school and home.
